TVs that are 40 inches or larger are generally 4K (and should be), while smaller displays generally make do with 720p (720 pixels measured vertically) or 1080p (1080 pixels measured vertically). 4K TVs generally have a host of other beneficial picture qualities thrown in, too, such as HDR - high dynamic range - for richer colors or support for Dolby Atmos (an improved audio standard). The new mapping results for the wild rice show only one discrepancy described earlier (Table 3, # 7) in a long homopolymer region. Illumina reads as against Ion Torrent reads of the W-rice-genotype were selected for remapping as even short Illumina reads (36 bases) of the R-rice-genotype provided a consensus matching the reference-sequence (Table 1), as against an inaccurate consensus when Ion Torrent reads were used (Table 1) due to indel-associated errors. To assess the correctness of this amended chloroplast sequence paired-end reads from Illumina sequencing platform were re-mapped to this new wild rice chloroplast genome. ![]() Based on the analysis and all the findings using various approaches outlined above, an amended wild-rice-genotype chloroplast consensus sequence was created incorporating the most probable variants from Table 3. However, all other errors found in Ion Torrent sequence (Table 3, # 8 to # 20) were not due mapping errors but read errors from either deletions or insertions in homopolymer regions. The location of the variation suggested that in both cases it could be an error. One of the variants ( # 7), an insertion of an A in the Ion Torrent consensus and AA in the Illumina consensus, was found in a long homopolymer stretch of 10 A’s. Similarly, mapping error and not sequence read error was the reason for variants detected at several positions in one or the other mapping-consensus sequences ( Table 3: for # 2 see Figure 2, for # 3 and # 4 see Figure 3), as these variants were not observed in the corresponding region of the contig sequences obtained from de novo assembly (from both analysis software). was not due to sequencing error but due to mapping artefact. ![]() ![]() Performance will, obviously, vary depending both on the speed of your scanner, and what hardware features it offers. This is hands-down my favorite of the trio. Its single PDF user manual is also unusually detailed and helpful. It's cleaner, faster and more modern than its rivals, and leaves more room to preview your images. VueScan's UI has Basic, Standard or Professional modes, all three mostly using drop-down lists very logically arranged in two to five tabs. ![]() It's the cleanest and most responsive of the bunch. ![]() VueScan's user interface largely revolves around intuitively named and well-categorized dropdown menus. VueScan's interface is faster and cleaner This was my least-favorite interface of the bunch. I also found it prone to making me wait for preview scans more than its rivals, and cancelling a batch scan can be extremely tedious as it makes you separately cancel every remaining frame, one by one. Help is provided throughout, but the many (and often redundant) buttons linking to abbreviated PDF manuals and numerous lengthy tutorial videos make its interface even more cluttered. Button colors vary for no logical reason, and active functions are indicated only with a tiny red dot. ![]() Manual mode gives access to everything at once, but is very busy and unnecessarily confusing. (And quite a few are duplicates, increasing the clutter.) SilverFast's user interface is packed with buttons and controls, not all of them intuitively named or labeled. Some choices feel odd, though: For example it won't allow you to simply scan a standard JPEG. WorkFlowPilot only allows single-photo scanning, and takes you through the process step by step. SilverFast has only two operating modes: WorkflowPilot or Manual. SilverFast is powerful, but overly dense and confusing Overall, it's reasonably usable but not great. For example, no matter how I configured Windows' resolution and scaling, its un-resizable configuration dialog overflowed its borders, preventing me from being able to do things like reset app defaults. Optional Full Auto and Home modes simplify things, but also hide many features altogether. No matter how I set Windows 10's resolution and scaling, I couldn't access the reset button on this non-resizable configuration dialog. It's split across five floating control panels that, together, don't leave much room to preview your slides, yet still offers fewer controls than its third-party rivals. To do so, I compared Epson Scan 3.9.3.4 – which comes bundled with the company's Perfection-series photo scanners and seems nicely representative of manufacturer-supplied software – with two of the most popular third-party alternatives, LaserSoft Imaging's SilverFast SE Plus 8.8.0r22 and Hamrick Software's VueScan Professional Edition 9.7.35.
